Cambodia following Buddhist Era to count the year based on the Buddhist calendar. For 2011, it is 2555 BE (Buddhist Era-The Buddhist calendar is used on mainland Southeast Asia in the countries of Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Burma (officially known as Myanmar) and Sri Lanka in several related forms. It is a lunisolar calendar having months that are alternately 29 and 30 days, with an intercalated day and a 30-day month added at regular intervals. All forms of the Buddhist calendar are based on the original version of the Surya Siddhanta, which dates to the 3rd century (both the original and medieval forms of the Surya Siddhanta are used by the various Hindu calendars).

The Origin of the Khmer New Year Celebration

Khmer New Year Legend

The celebration of the Khmer New Year has a very interesting legend. You will notice that in the picture of the New Year Angel, she comes carrying a jeung bian (golden tray) with the king of the gods' head. The story goes that once there was a very smart boy called Dhomabal Khumar, born to a very wealthy family. Dhomabal was exceptional in that he spoke four languages, reach at 7 years of age the ancient texts and canonical scriptures that monks study and spoke to the birds.

The village people loved him as he was not only clever but also kind. His father built him a beautiful temple close to the river where the birds lived and there Dhomabal would speak to the birds. But then, the king of the gods, KabilMohaProm, became jealous of Dhomabal and issued a challenge. He told Dhomabal that if he could not answer the questions he posed to him, he would cut his head off. But, if he could answer it, KabilMohaProm will cut off his own head. The questions:Where do you find happiness in the morning? The Noontime? And, in the evening?

As Dhomabal did not know the answer, he run away to the forest. Fearing for his life, he slumped into a tree where two eagles were perched in a conversation. Dhomabal heard them talking about the question on happiness to which they gave the answer. So Dhomabal learned the answers: in the morning, you find happiness in your face; midday, you find it in your body, and at night, your feet. Dhomabal gave the god the answer and he went to the king of the gods and gave him the answer. Because it was correct, the king of the gods had his own head cut off. He then told his eldest daughter to put his head in a jeung pian and carrying this golden tray circle around the Sumeru mountain for 60minutes and then bring his head to the Khimalay temple in heaven. His head cannot be thrown to the ground as this will cause fire, to the the sky as this will cause drought or to the ocean as this will dry up so the seven daughters have to take turns carrying the head. From then on, as the king of the gods cannot anymore bless his people, he sent his seven daughters as his angels to give his Khmer people blessing at the start of the new year.

Because of the story of Dhomabal, to get the blessing for the new year, the Khmer follow the ritual of washing their face in the morning, their body in midday and their feet in the evening.

Know the 2011 Khmer New Year Angel

The 2011 Khmer NewYear Angel is KarineyTevi

This year's Khmer New Year angel is the fifth youngest in the family of seven and her name is KarineyTevi. She'll come riding on an elephant joined by a cast of thousands of angels. At the lead of the procession is the guide angel riding a rabbit, this being the year of the rabbit and therefore her knowing the way. Please...do not call her Rudolph!

You can see this year's angel, KarineyTevi, on the cover of the book, Maha Songkran, published each year to guide the Khmer on how to celebrate this new year. The offerings are clearly stated there and the time when the angel arrives. It looks like the she'll come between 11-12 noon on the 14th of April, a Thursday. You can see the angel wearing green, the color that Khmer wear when they go to the temple on a Thursday. She does NOT say ho ho ho!

The coming of the angel will be announced by drums and gongs in the temples. At home, the Khmer watch the television to wait for the signal that the angel has come. It's the same guys that do the Santa radar watch. Once the signal has been aired, the family gathers around the table prepared specially for this occasion and pray to the angel to give them the blessing.

The Khmer believe that the families that prepare well to welcome the New Year Angel, will get what they pray for. In fact, astrologers are employed to determine what the angels love. It turns out that for 2010, the New Year Angel wanted fresh milk and red juice.

This year, 2011, 1 pair of numva banana, a pair of coconuts, 11 items of fruits and sweets are what the angels want. So, get ready and let the Khmer new year angel find you worthy.

Names of the Khmer New Year Angels

There are seven Khmer new year angels, each one representing the day of the week. This year's angel is the Thursday angel, the first day of 2011 Khmer New Year being a Thursday. She is dressed in green, the Thursday Khmer lucky color for going to the temple. The others are:

• 1First Angel: Tuksa Tevi. The Sunday Angel who comes riding a bird of fire, the Phoenix.
• 2Second Angel: Korike Tevi. The Monday Angel who comes riding a Tiger.
• 3Third Angel: Reakyasa Tevi. The Tuesday Angel who comes riding an Atsara.
• 4Fourth Angel: Mondea Tevi. The Wednesday Angel who comes riding a donkey.
• 5Fifth Angel: Kariney Tevi. The Thursday Angel who comes riding and elephant. This is the 2011 angel as the first day of Khmer New Year this year is Thursday.
• 6Sixth Angel: Kemerea Tevi. The Firday Angel who comes riding a buffalo.
• 7Seventh Angel: Mohouterea Tevi. The Saturday Angel who comes riding a peacock.

Cambodian New Year is most important holiday. The cities empty as Cambodians rush to spend the holiday with family. The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year’s Day. This time of the year is at the end of the harvesting season. The farmers enjoy the fruits of their harvest and relax before the rainy season begins. Gifts and tips are especially auspicious during April and should be accompanied with the phrase ‘Sok Sabay, Ch’nam Tmey’ (Happy New Year!)

Days before the Chaul Chnam Thmey, Cambodians get busy. They clean the house, every corner of it. The angel may check! They prepare special food and buy new clothes. Even the husband gets a polishing and grandma a decent dusting at least. Everything has to be spic and span for the visit of the New Year Angel and with the kids, you've got it, she knows who has been naughty or nice.

-The three days of the new year:

1.Thursday, 14 April 2011 Maha Songkran (មហាសង្រ្កាន្ត) Maha Songkran, derived from Sanskrit Maha Sankranti, is the name of the first day of the new year celebration. It is the ending of the year and the beginning of a new one. People dress up and light candles and burn incense sticks at shrines, where the members of each family pay homage to offer thanks for the Buddha's teachings by bowing, kneeling and prostrating themselves three times before his image. For good luck people wash their face with holy water in the morning, their chests at noon, and their feet in the evening before they go to bed.

2.Friday, 15 April 2011 Virak Wanabat (វ័នបត) Virak Wanabat is the name of the second day of the new year celebration. People contribute charity to the less fortunate by helping the poor, servants, homeless, and low-income families. Families attend a dedication ceremony to their ancestors at the monastery.

3.Saturday, 16 April 2011 Tngay Leang Saka (ថ្ងៃឡើងស័ក) Tngay Leang Saka is the name of the third day of the new year celebration. Buddhists cleanse the Buddha statues and their elders with perfumed water. Bathing the Buddha images is the symbol that water will be needed for all kinds of plants and lives. It is also thought to be a kind deed that will bring longevity, good luck, happiness and prosperity in life. By bathing their grandparents and parents, children can obtain from them best wishes and good advice for the future.

New Year's customs

In temples, people erect a sand hillock on temple grounds. They mound up a big pointed hill of sand or dome in the center which represents sakyamuni satya, the stupa at Tavatimsa, where the Buddha's hair and diadem are buried. The big stupa is surrounded by four small ones, which represent the stupas of the Buddha's favorite disciples: Sariputta, Moggallana, Ananda, and Maha Kassapa. There is another tradition: pouring water or liquid plaster (a mixture of water with some chalk powder) on someone.

The Khmer New Year is also a time to prepare special dishes. One of these is a "kralan": a cake made from steamed rice mixed with beans or peas, grated coconut and coconut milk. The mixture is stuffed inside a bamboo stick and slowly roasted.

Khmer games (ល្បែង⁣ប្រជាប្រិយ⁣)

Cambodia is home to a variety of games played to transform the dull days into memorable occasions. These games are similar to those played at Manipur, a north-eastern state in India. Throughout the Khmer New Year, street corners often are crowded with friends and families enjoying a break from routine, filling their free time with dancing and games. Typically, Khmer games help maintain one's mental and physical dexterity. The body's blood pressure, muscle system and brain are challenged and strengthened for fun.

• "Tres"

A game played by throwing and catching a ball with one hand while trying to catch an increasing number of sticks with the other hand. Usually, pens or chopsticks are used as the sticks to be caught.

• "Chol Chhoung (ចោល⁣ឈូង⁣) "

A game played especially on the first nightfall of the Khmer New Year by two groups of boys and girls. Ten or 20 people comprise each group, standing in two rows opposite each other. One group throws the "chhoung" to the other group. When it is caught, it will be rapidly thrown back to the first group. If someone is hit by the "chhoung," the whole group must dance to get the "chhoung" back while the other group sings.

• "Chab Kon Kleng (ចាប់⁣កូនខ្លែង)⁣ "

A game played by imitating a hen as she protects her chicks from a crow. Adults typically play this game on the night of the first New Year's Day. Participants usually appoint a strong player to play the hen who protects "her" chicks, while another person is picked to be the "crow". While both sides sing a song of bargaining, the crow tries to catch as many chicks as possible as they hide behind the hen.

• "Bos Angkunh (បោះអង្គុញ⁣)"

A game played by two groups of boys and girls. Each group throws their own "angkunh" to hit the master "angkunhs," which belong to the other group and are placed on the ground. The winners must knock the knees of the losers with the "angkunh." "Angkunh" is also the name of an inedible fruit seed, which looks like a knee bone.

• "Leak Kanseng (លាក់⁣កន្សែង)⁣ "

A game played by a group of children sitting in a circle. Someone holding a "kanseng" (Cambodian towel) that is twisted into a round shape walks around the circle while singing a song. The person walking secretly tries to place the "kanseng" behind one of the children. If that chosen child realizes what is happening, he or she must pick up the "kanseng" and beat the person sitting next to him or her.

• "Bay Khon"

A game played by two children in rural or urban areas during their leisure time. Ten holes are dug in the shape of an oval into a board in the ground. The game is played with 42 small beads, stones or fruit seeds. Before starting the game, five beads are put into each of the two holes located at the tip of the board. Four beads are placed in each of the remaining eight holes. The first player takes all the beads from any hole and drops them one by one in the other holes. He or she must repeat this process until they have dropped the last bead into a hole that lies besides any empty one. Then they must take all the beads in the hole that follows the empty one. At this point, the second player may have his turn. The game ends when all the holes are empty. The player with the greatest number of beads wins the game. It is possibly similar to congkak.

• "Klah Klok (ខ្លា ឃ្លោក) "

A game played by Cambodians of all ages. It is a gambling game that is fun for all ages involving a mat and some dice. You put money on the object that you believe the person rolling the dice (which is usually shaken in a type of bowl) and you wait. If the objects face up on the dice are the same as the objects you put money on, you double it. If there are two of yours, you triple, and so on.

Keo Pichpisey denied a withdrawn house by bank

A Khmer movie actress, Keo Pichpisey, used to reveal the public that she really borrowed $30,000 from bank after she got divorced with her Cambodian-Australian husband. But recently, it is reported that her house was withdrawn by bank, located in Chom Chao district at the west of Phnom Penh capital. But she rejected this rumor.

Keo Pichpisey told Angkor Thom Magazine by phone as saying that “this new is not true.” And she realized that she is not broke until she could not make money to pay bank.

She got married to a Cambodian-Australia man at the end of last year but her marriage ended after two months later because her husband has a wife and kids in Australia already.

Khmer actress, Keo Nisa, always has many scandals in her private life and then she was not seen performing in any movies so far. On August 01, 2010, she was spotted walking into café with a 40-year-man at around 2:30 pm in Phnom Penh. Relation between her and a man is closer.

Unlike before 1975 when there was only one Khmer TV station in Cambodia and working for a TV station as a host or producer was limited to only a few individuals, now there are many TV and radio stations - both private and government owned. This has created a whole new media industry for Cambodian people not only to find a job but also to build a career. Being a successful TV host or producer can be seen as a highly regarded professional in Khmer society similar to being a famous movie star or professional singer. While there are many TV hosts who are just hopping around from one station to another or from one job to another, Pho Sophanith is a truly professional TV host and producer who has been very well-known to be one of the greatest.

If you don’t know who Pho Sophanith is or who we are talking about, perhaps you have not heard of a sweet and handsome gentleman from Battambang province and please read on. People think he is sweet talking, but to me he is not just a regular sweet talking guy. He is handsome, polite, intelligent, well-educated, hard-working, articulating and yes he speaks sweetly. Pho Sophanith is one of a few news anchors and hosts who speak eloquently with the least grammatical errors in a live TV program. With more than 15 years of experience in the field, Pho Sophanith has earned great respects from his audience, co-workers, peers and Khmer communities throughout the world. He is truly an icon of what defines a great TV host. As such we decided to profile Pho Sophanith for Angkorthom.US. He is the third host added to Angkorthom.US together with Yok Chinda and Kieu Sansana.

Pho Sophanith was born in Battambang in 1977. His father’s is Mr. Pho Morn. He is a governmental official and his mother is a house wife. Pho Sophanith is the eldest child in the family. He has 2 sisters who are now married and live in USA and 2 other brothers. When he was young, he was educated in Battambang. He then moved to Phnom Penh to pursue his higher education. Because he had no relatives in Phnom Penh, he had to stay at a Wat (Buddhist temple) when he first came to the City. Because he needed money to fund his education and his living, he had to find work. It was a coincidence when TV3 was hiring. So he applied for a job with them.

Going through a tough competition with other candidates and screening, Pho Sophanith was hired as a TV host with TV3 in 1993. It was initially just a job for him to earn money to support his study but into the years he became more and more proficient and effective to a point he decided to stay with TV3 for 10 years! Working for TV3 gave him a whole new career arena. Though it was not what he first came to Phnom Penh for, it was a great success for him. He gained tremendous experience in hosting, producing, coordinating and managing a radio and TV program.

With great confidence and experience in media management, Pho Sophanith then created a media production house to coordinate and produce TV and radio programs, shows and concerts. He sometimes coordinated a TV program that was aired by 2 or 3 TV stations. It was also a great success. After working for TV3 for almost 10 years, he then worked for TV9 for a year as a host and producer. He then began working for CTN until today. Working for CTN marked another great milestone for his career endeavor. His popularity went up to the top because he is not only seen everyday by people in Cambodia but also people in USA and other counties where CTN is available. Each day he is invited to Khmer people’s house around the world for news and entertainment. For the last two years with CTN, Pho Sophanith has been trusted by CTN management and given the opportunities to host and manage important shows such as Ratrey Komsan, Super Boy and Girl, News, Wat Aram, etc.

At the time this article was being written, he is working on another important show to preserve Khmer traditional music heritage called Morodok Dounta. During the interview, he mentioned that it was also his plan to create another show for Khmer traditional music fans to request a song similar to the current Song Request program by Mr. Ith Sitha. Besides working for TV stations such as TV3, TV9 and CTN, Pho Sophanith also worked for music production companies such as Angkorwat, Rasmey Hang Meas and Reymeas. During Reymeas Production 100th DVD Celebration, Pho Sophanith was invited by Reymeas Production Manager to host the show. It was to everybody’s surprise, he managed to record two songs with Khiev Sansana.

Looking back, he told Angkorthom.US during his phone interview that he originally did not plan to have a career in the media industry as a TV host/producer like today. It was by accident because of his first job landed him on a job in the field, and it opened up and paved his way for a career. He mentioned that he wanted to be a lawyer as he liked to help people find justice. Since he is now too deep in field, he said his future goal now is to hold a management position for a TV Station such as CTN.

Undeniably, Pho Sophonith is one of the distinguished TV hosts/producers in Cambodia and overseas for Khmer society. Though he has not gone to visit counties like France, Australia or USA, people there know him very well and see him everyday via CTN. In addition to his formal education in school, he also has great general knowledge about the world and that is reflected in his choices of word each time he speaks. Pho Sophanith is a great role model who works hard and has earned his reputation and popularity. Among many, Pho Sophanith is one of a few best TV news announcers who can speak eloquently and he also soft spoken, giving him the title of Pithi Kor Somdey Pha-Em.

On a personal level, Pho Sophanith is humble, friendly, pleasant, entertaining and polite. He is well-liked by everybody who has a chance to meet him. He would make you feel comfortable the first time you talk to him and that is not to mention he can entertain too. When asked about his marriage and family, Pho Sophanith said he is now in the right age to get married. As soon as he can find a girl, he would get married. However right now, he said his heart is still available to any girl who can love and care of him and his family.

So now, you know who Pho Sophanith is and why he is such as a great Khmer role model and a TV host. Next time when you watch CTN, you’ll see what we meant. Personally, we are lucky to meet him by accident at CTN studio in 2008. That was a great opportunity to know more about him and became his friend. We hope to see him again in the future. Khmemarak Sereymon is another great Khmer singer who has excelled in his career for the last several years in the Khmer entertainment world and has risen to the top among a few best Cambodian singers. Many people would agree his unique voice quality and style are the key factors of his success. Though he is better-known inside the country because he has been working for only local music production companies so far, his songs are also very popular among young and middle age fans overseas.

Khemararak Seyreymon is one of the great vocalists. He definitely can produce beautiful songs and great concerts to entertain his fans. Each song of his was very carefully created. His voice was very clear and precise. His well-known specialty is singing new songs or rewritten songs with high notes which some singers can’t do. Besides his voice, his style is also unique and interesting. The way he is dressed, his hairstyles and choreographies are better-liked and aimed for younger fans than older ones. Over all, Khemarak Sereymon is a great entertainer.

He first started his music career in 2004 with U2 Production as a song writer and progressively developed his skills in music and knowledge in singing until he received the top award from Nestle for one of the singing contests. He was then hired by U2 Production as a singer. His first hit song by which many people got to know him was On Toung Snei and Proum Tang Alai. While he began to add more and more songs to his portfolio, Khemarak Sereymon also did many TV concerts and appearances to promote himself. People began to recognize the quality of his voice and began to like his style.

In 2008, Khemarak Sereymon started working for Sunday (SD) Production. Unlike U2, Sunday Production produced a good number of alums which helped him boosting both his popularity and reputation. There were many songs recorded, but some of his hit songs made by Sunday Production are Chong Ban Propun Khmer, Bong Kos Houey, Kom Hos Krum Yang Khos Mok Pi Rub Khjom, Tov Don Dong Koun Ke, etc. (Please see videos below) People got to know him via CD, CVD and DVD albums sold both inside and outside of the country and many concerts throughout Cambodia. So far he has gone to Australia twice.

Khemarak Sereymon was born in Prey Chhor District, Kampong Cham in 1981. His father’s name is Pith Si Khon and his mother’s name is Chan Nary. Among his 6 siblings, one of his sisters – Khemarak Sreypov is also a singer for Sunday Production. After he finished High School, he came to Phnom Penh City to find work in early 2004. He worked as a security guard at first and then worked as a marketing staff member for a company until he could get a job as a song writer for U2 Production. At the time of the interview, he is still single. Khemarak Sereymon is a breadwinner for his family, and today his family is better off because of him.

He is one of the great singers who had built up his perfections by working hard, practicing and applying his own techniques with little formal training or coaching from others. Today, he is one of the well-known stars and many people outside of the country wish to see him. Angkorthom.US wishes him the best of luck for his future.

When Tep Rindaro was a child he used to sneak into the cinema with his elderly next-door-neighbor. He never paid; he just slunk in with his hand in his neighbor’s fooling the attendants into thinking the pair were father and son.

Tep, 43, is now considered one of Cambodia’s most formidable actors and ironically, if his own father had survived the genocidal regime of the 1970s, Tep says he wouldn’t be where he is today.

"Ever since I was a child I loved the movies, but my father didn’t approve of me pursuing a career in the film industry. Secretly, I’d made up my mind; I ajust had to bide my time. My father wanted me to study medicine, and because good children must obey their parents, I decided to at least study something practical. In 1981 I actually got a scholarship to study in Russia as an airplane mechanic, but I continued to dream of stardom," Tep says.

"I worked as a mechanic purely for the benefit of my parents," he says.

Roaring with laughter Tep explains the "sneaky" tactics he employed to pursue that dream. "At night I watched movies, which my father was often angry about. You see, if I watched movies all the time I forgot about my school work, and by midday, I was always very sleepy and couldn’t study. Once, my father gave me a stern warning to stop watching movies—he was very strict—

he said if he ever caught me watching movies again, I would be punished."

"I obeyed my parents to a certain extent ... but I did tell some lies, often going to watch movies at night without tell[ing] them."

And while he was admonished, Tep says he remains grateful for most of the advice his parents gave him.

In 1984, he returned from Russia with qualifications, but with no employment opportunities available in Phnom Penh, Tep once again left Cambodia.

"I couldn’t find work at Phnom Penh’s Pochentong airport because back then the runways were too short for large aircraft to land, so I left for Vietnam where I worked at Ho Chi Minh’s airport for three years before finally securing a job back in Phnom Penh."

But finally, at the age of 24, Tep’s dream of stardom came true, when he secured a part in Tuk Pneak Sroh Nov Pel Reatrey (A Quiet Tear at Night). With no formal acting training, he says his ability merely came from "watching a lot of television—without telling my parents" and from the depths of his own "imagination". When he talks about this first role, Tep again bursts out laughing and says, "I don’t really want to talk about my beginnings." But he does.

"In that first movie, I didn’t even get paid. The film’s producer told me he’d pay me later, but I still haven’t been given any money! Anyway, that wasn’t a popular film, because the story didn’t interest the audiences."

Even his own mother wasn’t enamored with his beginnings, or the movie, for that matter. "My father had recently died, and my mother knew nothing about my new career. I could tell she was surprised to see my face on the screen at the theater, but she said nothing."

Things improved for Tep in 1990 when he made his second appearance in the film Ark Kambang Kech Sanyar (The Secret Promise), produced by Ses Vong Setha and co-starring actress Apor Tevy. A romantic drama, Tep played the role of a Cambodian doctor, who returns to his homeland after living abroad to search for the family he lost during the Pol Pot regime, meanwhile falling in love with a young woman (Apor). Tep jokes that his fame was actually all down to a good hairdresser: "I became a famous film star at that time because of my hair. All the film stars of those days had long hair, but mine was cut short."

However, there is much more to Tep’s talents than his hair. In 2005, Princess Norodom Buppha Devi awarded him a certificate on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts for his work in the film industry. That same year, King Norodom Sihamoni made Tep a Royal Officer (a Thnak Sina) of the Kingdom and the following year, a further honor was bestowed upon Tep by the King when he became ranked higher still as a Mony Sophon Thnak Sina.

For an airplane mechanic from modest beginnings in Battambang, this is some career leap. Still single, Tep says he doesn’t worry about marriage.

"I only care about my job ... and earn[ing] the money to maintain my standard of living. I don’t ever think about stopping my acting career, and I only will when my health prevents me. I love this part of my life."

Film Star Jackie Chan on Arts, Culture, Peace

When film star and martial artist Jackie Chan visited Cambodia earlier this month, he brought a simple message: arts and culture are pathways to peace.

Chan spoke to 600 students and others at the University of Cambodia, focusing on a message of world peace, reminding participants that the world is a village, and that its residents should love one another despite race, complexion and social status.

“He encouraged the younger generation to build a culture of peace,” said Kao Kim Hourn, founder of the University of Cambodia, which conferred an honorary doctoral degree in humanities to Chan.

Chan, a celebrity who had his start in Chinese films after a childhood with little education, has become a role model for the young, sponsoring educational institutes and serving as a goodwill ambassador for Unicef and UNAIDS.

Speaking as part of the Asean “Bridges” program, Chan told students that the Earth is a tiny disc when viewed from the moon, a reminder of how small the place is.

“When he was young, he asked himself, as a human being who lives on Planet Earth, before he passed away, what could he leave for the younger generation,” said Eung Kim Muyly, a freshmen of international relations atthe University of Cambodia . “We can take those words under consideration, and we will feel that we also want to do something proper for our Planet Earth and leave something valuable for our planet, as he is doing now.”

Asked about the ongoing row between Cambodian and Thailand, Chan told participants it was a matter to be settled among political leaders.

“If we know well the definition of peace, our people wouldn’t have had demonstrations to cause confrontations among both countries,” said Ky Vannaroath, a sophomore of computer science atthe university . “If a person loves peace, if 100 percent of people love peace, if everyone loves peace, then there’s no conflict. After I listened to him, I felt I must study hard. He talked about being broke when he was a student, but I have an opportunity and I therefore must study hard for my future as well as for the future of my country.”

Preap Sovath wants his sons to be singers

Cambodian youths always have supported his voice, and his popularity is going smoothly. Recently, his two sons started singing in the public aired by TV5 and CTN. The both wore dresses and sang their father’s songs.

Preap Sovath told local magazines that he wants his sons to be more famous as him in the art career.

So far, Sovath has three sons. The first and second sons are following in their father’s footsteps.

Sovath told Popular Magazine that “my sons are talent for art like me but I am not sure what will happens in the future whether they really love art or not. And if they do not, I cannot push them, what is important is up to their talent.”

He added that “if they like it, I’m their father, I want them to be good sons and better than their father. And then I am so happy.”

So far, the age of Sovath is reaching 30 years old. Now, he still does not mention that when he will be retired.

In their own words: Getting students fired up for film

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
University of Puthisastra launches Cambodia’s first campus TV station run by and for students

Working with Cambodian university students on producing live, recorded and streamed student productions.

Inspired by his undergraduate days working on productions for Leeds Student Television, Max Doherty decided to spearhead Cambodia’s first wholly student-managed, conceptualised and catered-for university television station. Calling it University of Puthisastra Student Television (UPSTV), Doherty desires for the university to enter student video competitions and develop international collaborations with other university video clubs.

What were you doing previously before coming to Cambodia?
Previously, I was producing promotional videos for AIESEC (Association for International Students in Economics and Commerce) exchange programmes and creating a video for AIESEC International Youth Conference. I was also involved in production work for the BBC and Tate Gallery of Modern Art and spent nearly a year in Uganda as an AIDS volunteer, educating youths about the risks of infection and transmission of STDs.

What was the inspiration for the idea of setting up a film club?
I was a member of a similar club at the University of Leeds, and when I heard that there was no equivalent in Cambodia, I became very excited about the prospect of starting one here. I think Cambodia is in a fascinating transition to modernity, and seeing this from a Cambodian viewpoint will be very interesting.

How did you select the university to be the host or originator of this initiative? Why was it suitable?
The University of Puthisastra is a dynamic new university which has an excellent open-minded approach to new ideas. University of Puthisastra aims to provide a more exciting student experience and a vibrant campus culture which is currently lacking in Cambodian universities. UP plans to increase the number of choices available to its students by improving extracurricular activities.

How will UPSTV build external relationships and increase the professional exposure of students?
UPSTV will build relationships with local production companies by inviting filmmakers to conduct training seminars, bringing in individuals to judge UPSTV videos, making trips to shooting locations and eventually having members undertake internships. Activities include film and editing training, group video projects, film screening events, international film competitions and film video trips. UPSTV will very rapidly build relationships with the broader community especially the Phnom Penh video/film and media scene.

How can UPSTV build global recognition and advancement of UP?
Entries to international film competitions aim to attract attention from media, government and other universities as some of the only student videos from Cambodia being submitted. Winning these competitions would be an extra credential and sense of accomplishment for UPSTV and the institution.

What type of students do you hope will participate in this project?
No prior experience making videos will be necessary for successful application. The essential attributes for a UPSTV member to possess are enthusiasm, dedication and above all creativity. I want members to develop their own unique styles.

What aspects of Cambodian culture/lifestyle or history do you hope to have students examine?
I hope that students’ films will help portray how the country is changing and give an idea about where Cambodian society is headed. I’m not particularly interested in endlessly dragging the Khmer Rouge period onto the screen. I feel it’s a shame that ‘Khmer Rouge’ is the first thing that comes to mind when Cambodia is mentioned to foreigners. I want to force students to be creative and display Cambodia’s rapidly changing society in innovative ways.

What is the objective of the film club in educating/informing students?
Long-term active membership of the club will produce an individual who is very well-placed to seek employment in TV/film production. I would also like to see the club’s members making critical observations on the world around them and developing a culture of questioning norms when making documentary films.

What external services do you hope to benefit external organizations and the local community?
UPSTV will very rapidly build a relationship with the broader community especially the Phnom Penh video/film and media scene. Eventually I want to be producing young filmmakers of a good enough calibre to intern in local production companies.

Water Festival (1-2-3- of November,2009)

The annual three-day Water Festival competes with the Khmer New Year for being the most important holiday for Cambodians. The boat races on the Tonle Sap and the carnival atmosphere ashore attract millons of people from all over the country.

A smaller Water Festival is held around Angkor Wat, but for the real thing you'll have to go to Phnom Penh.

In Khmer the annual Water Festival is called Bonn Om Toeuk. The Water and Moon Festival ushers in the fishing season. It also marks the reversal of the current in Tonle Sap river. Boat races as well as fireworks displays are held at the river.

Date in 2009:
1-2-3 November

More than 300 boats, propelled by precision-trained oarsmen, take part in the annual boat race, the highlight of the Water Festival or Bonn Om Touk. This is one of the major events in the Kingdom which attracts multitudes of people from the various provinces to the capital Phnom Penh.

They arrive by buses, cars, bikes, cyclos, bicycles and even trucks. Many stay over in the city during the three-day festival, lending support to their boat team. Others use this opportunity to explore the sights and sounds of Phnom Penh - for many it is the only occasion to visit the city.

The Water Festival also marks a unique natural phenomenon - the Tonle Sap river reverses the flow of its current. It is probably the only waterway in the world which flows in opposite directions at different times of the year.

The Tonle Sap lake or Great Lake is a vast expanse of water, once an arm of the sea, which forms the most significant topographical feature in country. The lake is fed by the Mekong river and the Tonle Sap river.

From November to May, the Tonle Sap river runs into the Mekong just like any other tributary.

But with the arrival of the monsoon rains, there is such build-up of water in the main stream that excess pours into the Tonle Sap river, forcing it to change direction and flow back into the Tonle Sap lake.

The Festival also coincides with the full moon of the Buddhist calendar month of Kadeuk. The Cambodians believe that the full moon is a good omen which promises a bountiful harvest.

On this night, especially in the countryside, people gather to give thanks to the moon. Special food is prepared for this occasion - fruits, vegetables and fish amok, a uniquely Cambodian speciality. Candles are lit, incense burnt and offerings made. The chief priest lights the candles and as it drips on the banana leaves spread beneath the candles, predictions are made. It is said that the shape of the melted wax on the banana leaves dictates the state of all future harvest for the year.

Carnival in Phnom Penh

It is not surprising that the city takes on a carnival air during this period. Open-air live concerts are held, make-shift food stalls selling a variety of local fare are set up in parks and children as well as adults take rides on ferris wheels.

Colourful buntings and banners adorn government buildings and as night falls the Royal Palace is brightly lit with colourful lights. Brilliant fireworks illuminate the night sky and flotillas, outlined by lights, glide gracefully down the river. This is, in fact, Cambodia's version of the Mardis Gras.

Jackie Chan to Arrive Cambodia Today

World famous Hong Kong and Hollywood movie star Jackie Chan, also called Chin Long, will arrive Cambodia today for promotion of the culture of peace through the arts and culture, a press release from the International Peace Foundation and university of Cambodia, co-organizer of his trip here said on Monday. Jackie Chan, also is a keen philanthropist and a UNICEF/ UNAIDS goodwill ambassador, will jointly sing with famous Cambodian singers including Preab Sowath, Hem Sivorn, and Meng keo Pic Chenda from 4- 6 pm today at South East Asia Television in Tek Thla location in Phnom Penh, the press release said. Jackie Chan will deliver his speech about arts and culture as a pathway towards peace at University of Cambodia at 2 pm on November 11, and he also will receive an honorary doctorate degree from UC. On Wednesday, November 11 at 10:30, he also will have dialogue with high school students at the International School of Phnom Penh in Phnom Penh (Cambodia ), but this will not be a public event. “Jackie Chan in Cambodia is one of a series of the famous and world leaders to be here to share experiences and their contribution to promote culture of peace and region and the world,” said Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, UC president. Jackie Chan is a Hong Kong actor, action choreographer, filmmaker, producer, martial artist, screenwriter, entrepreneur, singer and stunt performer who has appeared in over 100 films. He has received stars on the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has been referenced in various pop songs, cartoons and video games. Having released 20 albums, he is also a Cantopop and Mandopop star who sang many of the theme songs for his films. In 2008 he performed at the Summer Olympics closing ceremony in Beijing . Jackie Chan began his adult career in 1971 in the Kung Fu film A Touch of Zen. He worked as a stuntman in the Bruce Lee films Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon and received his first starring role in Little Tiger of Canton in 1973. Jackie Chan’s first major breakthrough was the 1978 film Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow, the film which established the comedic kung fu genre. He then directed The Fearless Hyena and starred in Drunken Master, which propelled him to mainstream success. There is a rumor that Preap Sovath is competing neck to neck with Sapoun Midada to be selected for the main character as Sdech Korn - the up-coming big scale movie by Hang Meas Productions. According to a news article released by Everyday on 08/24/2007, Preap Sovath was working out pumping his muscles so he could look bigger and stronger for the role. Also, the article said Preap Sovath was spending money to treat very important people who might be able to help him get the role. Some people believe Preap Sovath has a better edge over Sapoun Midada as the “Crocodile” movie which he played the main male character is very successful; whereas Sapoun Midada has not played for any successful big scale movie so far. Talking about the fans, they both have about the same popularity though Preap Sovath tends attract younger and city fans and Sapoun Midada tends to attract older and rural fans. For the body build, they both look about the same though Sapoun Midada looks a little bigger than Preap Sovath.

A report by Reaksmey Kampuchea newspapers said that Sapoun Midada is leading because his popularity is more toward middle and old age fans who are more likely to like the movie. It was said Preap Sovath’s popularity has been going down hill these days due to the death of his song writer – Chum Bun Thouen. There are some new Rasmey Hang Meas Productions’ DVDs that don’t even have one Preap Sovath’s song in them. Preap Sovath is seen losing focus as he is involved with a lot of businesses which may require his undivided attention. Recently, Modern Magazine released a news article about his new Beautician (Preap Sovath’s Som Arng Ka) shop run by his mother-in-law – Kong Chantu had recently opened. There are different services ranging from $700USD to $2,000USD per wedding. For $1,500 and up, Preap Sovath will perform live at the wedding as part of the service. Around July 2007, he has opened a restaurant called Slok Chak (Chak Leaf). On the opposite, Sapoun Midada has been very focusing on singing, acting and song writing for Hang Meas Productions.

So far there is no new official information regarding who is leading in this race but there seem to be more publicity on Preap Sovath and as usual not much publicity on Sapoun Midada. All other roles of the movie have been filled except the main male and female characters which were said to be selected by Mao Ayouth, the Secrectary of the News Department and so far he has not given any hint as to who he will select. On a side note, there is a rumor about Sokun Nisa being speculated as a possible actoress for the female character role.
