Cambodia’s government to probe film star complaints

Doung Zorida (Phone Penh post)

THE Ministry of Interior has opened investigations into Phnom Penh karaoke parlours that used the image of film stars to advertise escort services and attract patrons, following complaints from two high-profile starlets.
Ten Borany, deputy director of the ministry’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department, said authorities would conduct investigations to determine whether the club owners had committed a criminal offence.
“I don’t know if we’ll have to punish the offenders because we don’t know what kind of crime they have committed,” he said.
“We are trying our best in order to find justice for the movie stars … and I hope we can solve the problem for them.”

No permission
Film stars Doung Zorida and Veng Sreyno complained to police last month when they found that their images - with price tags attached - were gracing the walls of local VIP clubs and brothels.

Doung Zorida, whose picture was shown in photo albums at some VIP clubs in Phnom Penh with a price of between US$4,000 and $8,000 attached, said that she had given Ministry of Interior officials additional information to help them in their investigations.
“I believe in the ability of the police and I think that the police know which clubs or madams of prostitution are doing these things, but they need to find evidence before they can arrest them,” she said.
She added that legal action was important for clearing her name, and that if she didn’t take action, people would think she was involved in prostitution.
“I don’t need any money from them. What I need is an apology and a public statement that I and the other movie stars did not sell our bodies,” she told the Post.
Ieng Sithul, director of the Khmer Actress Association, said that he was satisfied that police officials were trying to find justice for the two film stars, adding that it would help protect them against the dishonour of being associated with escort clubs.
“I hope that the police will do their best so that the actresses can maintain their honour,” he said.
“[These people] are looking down on themselves and their nation because they are the same nationality [as the actresses]. They are destroying their own culture and tradition.
“All people who have power and money should use their money in the right way, to suit their honour and that of their society,” he added.

Having beautiful hair does not have to cost you a fortune.

You don’t have to go to the hair dresser every week to have beautiful hair. There are things that you can do at home, to keep your hair healthy and beautiful. Don’t get me wrong, you need to keep your hair dresser in business too, but when times are tough you can save money, and still look great.Your hair is an important part of your physical appearance. When it looks bad, you don’t feel good about yourself. There is no reason for it to look bad. There are things that you can do at home to keep it looking, and feeling great without costing you a small fortune.

If you have hard water, it can build up on your hair and make it look dull and dirty. A simple remedy to get build up off, and add super shine is to do a vinegar rinse. Mix one part white vinegar with one part warm water (about ½ cup of each). Pour it on and work it through your hair, and leave on for about 10 minutes. Than rinse and shampoo your hair as usual. Do this about twice a month if you live in an area with very hard water.
Olive oil is good for your hairIs your hair dry and brittle? If so, work a tablespoon of olive oil through your hair. For a deep conditioning treatment, mix a table spoon of mayonnaise with a tablespoon of olive oil, and work it through your hair. Comb it through to distribute evenly. Wrap your hair in a plastic bag, and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Than remove the bag and rinse well. An additional light shampoo may be necessary to completely remove the conditioner. For a super scalp treatment, work about a half a teaspoon of olive oil into your scalp, using your finger tips to massage it in. Massage your scalp for 2-5 minutes for best results. Rinse well, and shampoo your hair as usual. This will help dry up a flaky scalp. Brush your hair and scalp daily with a soft to medium bristle brush. This stimulates the blood flow in the scalp which is vital for a healthy scalp. It also keeps the hair tangle free, and healthier looking. Everyone wants to look good, and it starts with a healthy looking head of hair.

How to Keep Plants Healthy and Beautiful the Natural Way

Did you know plants have an immune system just like people do? The healthier the plant, the more powerful its immune system is to fight off pests and disease. When plants are stressed due to heat, drought, poor soil or the wrong exposure, they grow weaker, and problems set in. The two most important things you can do are to keep your plants healthy, and frequently inspect them for early warning signs.

No two years are ever the same in gardens. This is due to variation in the weather, with some years warmer or cooler, wetter or drier. When conditions are right for a particular pest or disease, it will flourish, but if things change the next year, you may never see it at all. However, there may be persistent problems due to susceptibility of a certain plant variety or something unique in your yard.

Plants contain special chemicals that make them distasteful to bugs. When they are weakened by stress, the chemical levels are reduced and the plant becomes vulnerable. Often bugs attack the smallest, spindly plant of a group and will never spread to the healthy ones because their chemicals are more concentrated. These chemicals are so effective they are extracted for botanical pesticides such as pyrethrum, which is derived from a species of chrysanthemum. For every pest in nature there is a predator bug that will leave the plant alone while dining on the bad bugs. These collectively are called beneficials, which leads to pest population explosions once the predators are gone. The new approach to pest control is through least toxic measures designed to protect beneficials while controlling pests.

Identification of pests is your key to control. It also tells you what kind of damage potential they represent. For example, a gang of aphids can distort leaves, but they are nothing compared to a gang of armyworms that can defoliate a shrub overnight. These four are the most common bugs found in gardens: Aphids are sucking insects that cluster on new growth. Spider Mites are microscopic and dwell on the backside of the leaf. Caterpillars are voracious larvae that are very dangerous to all plants. Snails and slugs can wade through you flowers in short order.

It is far easier to wipe out a few bugs when they first appear than to control and infestation later. Frequent inspection of your plants means that you’ll catch problems early. Once the pest is identified, and you can bring samples to a Sheridan Gardens Nursery location, you can chose the least toxic controls. A spray of water will knock off many aphids or mites from the leaves. Clean, dust free leaves tend to keep insects away. Release Lady Bugs or Green Lacewing larvae, which will feed on the bad bugs. Hand pick or cut off single branches that have insects or scale. Spray with Pestfighter Oil for insects and to shine up the leaves so Powdery Mildew spores can’t get a grip on the leaves. Spray with BT Biological Control for Caterpillars. Apply Sluggo (Iron Phosphate) to control snails and mulch with Coco Mulch, snails won’t walk through it. Space your plants so air can circulate around the leaves; avoid watering at nighttime to prevent mildew and diseases, especially on lawns, roses and flowers.

By all means, bring samples and questions to your favorite MasterNursery Professional at the Sheridan Gardens nearest you. We have most of the answers for you.

Blind Man’s Blues

Sitting cross-legged, Neth Pe wails with cracking voice, hands flashing over his long-necked guitar. His sweet yet melancholy lament tells of far-away temples and long-lost loves.

This music, known in Khmer as Nak Chamreang Chapey, is one of the oldest art forms in the region and is well-loved by Cambodians of all ages. Most practitioners died during the disastrous Pol Pot regime (1975-79) and now only a few Kroo Bong Hat Chapei (Charpei masters remain).

Ask any Cambodian in the know and they will say that Nak Charmreang Chapey is 2549 years old, performed since the reign of Preah Samanakordom (the fifth in carnation of the Buddha), although at that time it was apparently called Pin. Whatever the truth of its invention, it is certain that Charpei Dorng Veng (long necked Charpei) is 100% Cambodian; performers identical to contemporary Naik Leing Charpei can be seen carved on the walls of the Bayon temple at Angkor.

Hun Sarin, a professor of fine arts at Phnom Penh’s Royal University, said the name Charpei Dorng Veng comes from the Pali words Pin and Vena translated into Khmer. Charpei is divided into Char, derived from the Pali Vearchar meaning speech, and Pei which means to sing a lullaby, to take care of, to make delicious, and to make sweet. “Together, these two form ‘Charpei’,” the professor said.

In ancient times Charpei was played for the king’s pleasure, at hair shaving ceremonies, at Choul Mlop [a coming of age ceremony], Bom Bous Neak [entering monkhood ritual], engagement ceremony, and Kat Kan Sla [a ritual part of traditional weddings].

“At that time, only monks could play Charmpei, but nowadays many people can play,” Sarin said. “Charpei greatly grew in popularity during the reign of King Ang Doung [1841-1860].

The art is intertwined with Cambodian spirituality, even down to the materials in the instruments manufacture. Side panels of Charpei are constructed using local Deum Samroung or Deum Raing hardwoods to protect players from dangers or bad thoughts (hog trough), while the face is made from Ro Lass Bay, a natural concrete made from sand and lime, or Deum Snay (another local hardwood) which guards against sin. The neck is made of Deum Sdauv or Deum Kro Sung wood to ensure a calm and soothing sound.

“We do like this because it is a religious belief and makes it easy to invite our spiritual masters and the other spirits to help us play,” explained 49-year old Charpei player Neth Pe.

To ensure a good performance, players initially sing about the goodness of parents, a tradition that Professor Sarin said promotes traditional values. However, said the dedication was symbolic, as Charpei playing itself represents the maternal goodness.

In fact, the music is so beautiful that many Khmers believe it turns musicians blind, a theory Neth Pe was anxious to rebut.

“Many people say that all Charpei singers become blind from playing the Charpei but this is not true because our elders such as Pearumm [an official title] Prach Chhoun and Pearumm Kong Nay have both been blind from birth,” he noted. “For me, I became blind because of a disease, not from playing Charpei. I always used to get dizzy so I did what Khmers traditionally do-pull out eyelashes. In June 2004, I had a serious problem with my right eye then it spread to my left eye.”

Neth Pe had a very practical explanation for the number of traditional musicians who are blind. “It is a simple problem,” he shrugged. “Everyone must have a job to earn a living. For us, the blind men, we also need a job and there aren’t many things we can do. We can only sing Charpei, which is an eas job for us because we don’t have to walk anywhere or carry heavy things. We just sit in one place and sing.”

As an able-bodied man, the decision to study traditional music may seem strange, although to Neth Pe it was the fulfillment of a life-long dream. “I learned this skill fast because I had talent from birth,” said with a smile. “I studied for only four months before I could sing. First, I just studied how to sing Charpei songs withut playing the Charpei. I mimicked the sounds of the instrument with my mouth instead.

“In my village I was always invited to play at villager’s weddings and as they wanted Ta Khe [a traditional Cambodian sither] players or Charpei players for the Kat Kan Sla [traditional pre-marriage ritual]. At that time I did not sing well, I just sang because villagers’ asked me to. “One day I heard Ho Charpei Hoss [a stage name] singing in my village and I was absolutely fascinated. I wanted to study his art but I didn’t know where I could study.”

In 1982, Neth Pe got his first break when another performer named Morm Sunn arrived in the village. “He sang Kro Vann Doung Kchey [about a giant in love with a beautiful girl] very sweetly and I could not curb my passion so I asked him to be my teacher.”

After a short apprenticeship with Morn Sunn, and with support from his friends and family, Neth Pe finally became a fully fledged Charpei singer. He began as an itinerant musician for hire, playing at rural ceremonies in his home province of Prey Veng although his popularity soon grew; leading him to enter a singing competition in Preah Sdech in 1988 wich he won.

Neth Pe subsequently decided to leave Prey Veng in search of further successes and entered Cambodia’s largest Charpei competition held at Phnom Penh’s Vil Preah Men (Royal rice field) in front of the National Museum. There he was again victorious, taking first place in the 2001 improvised Charpei Chlong Chley (Charpei conversation) section.

Charpei singers must be poets, Neth Pe said, as most songs are improvised. He, like most Charpei master, is exceptionally cheeky – good natured insults make up the bulk of Charpei Chlong Chleuy performances, much like the hip hop ‘batting’ of contemporary Western music.

“The most important thing is our bravery,” he claimed. “If we dare to sing our knowledge will improve.”

In recent years, authorities have taken measures to ensure the survival of traditional Cambodian arts such as Charpei. As part of this policy Neth Pe now lives in Phnom Penh with his wife and eigh chidren. He currently teaches ten students, including two girls, as well as his own offspring, who he said he wants to follow is his footsteps.

Dy Saveth today

She's been an actress since 1960, when she won Cambodia's first beauty pageant, and shows no signs of quitting. Her most recent role was in the short film In Drama, about ‘love and war'

Renowned Cambodian film star Dy Saveth, 64, has been acting since 1960, getting her start at the age of 16 after winning Cambodia's first beauty pageant the year before.

Her distinguished career began by chance when a movie producer approached her.
Being one of the most recognisable faces in Cambodia, Dy Saveth fled the country for France when the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975. Prior to leaving, she and her then-husband Huoy Keng ran a movie production company.

In 1975 they separated - Huoy Keng escaped to Hong Kong - and were later divorced.
Together the pair have two children, and Dy Saveth has since adopted two more. A big family suits the actress, who was herself one of seven children.

Dy Saveth's return to Cambodia in 1993 was greeted with shock, as most people had presumed that she - like most other actors of her generation - had been killed by the Khmer Rouge or died as a result of their rule.

She resumed her career on screen and continues to appear in numerous projects. Currently, she is a professor of fine arts at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, where she works to inspire a new generation of Khmer actors.

What was the first film you acted in?
Dy Saveth: The first movie I performed in was Kboun Chivit (Raft Life). Initially, I didn't want to act in films, but the movie producer of Kboun Chivit contacted my sister and asked her if I would be willing to act in their film. I was very lucky that this was the first film I was in because it has a good story line and the audience liked it."

I noted down all films i was in, but i lost the book during the pol pot regime.

What were the difficulties you encountered when you first started acting?
Dy Saveth: I didn't really know how to act when I first started my career, but I tried very hard to learn and I believe that's why I achieved success. I teach acting now, and I usually tell my students to focus on what they are doing because if they just listen without concentrating and practicing, they will not succeed. I teach my students for free because when I first started out, the audience really supported me and now I want to return this kindness. I don't have much money or property to give them. I only have my acting knowledge to pass on to those who want to learn.

How many films have you been in?
Dy Saveth: I have acted in around 100 films. I noted down all films I was in, but I lost the book during the Pol Pot regime. Pos Kengkong (The Python) and Sak Pos (Snake Hair) were the turning point, as the films made me very famous both locally and internationally.

How do you compare today's films to the films of the past?
Dy Saveth: All movie producers, writers and cameramen learned their craft at school in the past, except for the actors and actresses who listened to the producers' lead. Now, [they] learn the skills from each other. I never complained when I had to work very hard because I believed that at the end I would achieve success. I was lucky enough to work with good scriptwriters who tried to make each film different. Today, many actors and actresses are afraid of experiencing difficulties.

How many international movie stars have you worked with?
Dy Saveth: I have performed with Thai, Taiwanese, Korean, Indonesian and Chinese actors. King Sihanouk wrote and directed four films that I have appeared in. My latest film, In Drama, was filmed last year. It is a 30-minute story about love and war, and it hasn't been released on TV yet.

How do you keep yourself looking so young?
Dy Saveth: I try to avoid unhappy things that make me feel depressed. Also, I think carefully about the type of food I eat to stay healthy and drink plenty of water.

Inspiring thoughts : We forget that forgiveness is greater than revenge. People make mistakes.

We are allowed to make mistakes. But the actions we take while in a rage will haunt us forever.

Pause and ponder. Think before you act. Be patient. Forgive & forget. Love one and all.

If you judge people, you have no time to love them. -- Mother Teresa

Unconditional Love - motivating story

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco.
"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me."

"Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him."

"There's something you should know the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."

Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us.

motivational stories - THE 4 WIVES

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He's very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.

He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant's confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.

Now, the merchant's 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, "Now I have 4 wives with me. But when I die, I'll be alone. How lonely I'll be!"

Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.

The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is so good over here! I'm going to remarry when you die!" The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help and you've always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.

Then a voice called out : "I'll leave with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go." The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, "I should have taken much better care of you while I could have !"

Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives

a. The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die.

b. Our 3rd wife ? Our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.

c. The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we're alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

d. The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.

Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it's a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament
